Second Copy 7/2000 doesn't copy files that are in use (by design)
This is by design. If you are copying, moving or synchronizing files you will see an error in the Log.

The reason:
Copying in-use files does not guarantee the integrity of files. Most back up programs do not copy files that are in-use by another application because you may copy a portion of the file and before you copy the other portion of the same file, the controlling application may write something in the old area (that has been already copied).

When Second Copy copies files, it must ensure the integrity of each file. To achieve this, Second Copy temporarily locks the source file before copying it. The lock prevents other programs from writing to the file until Second Copy is done copying it.

The in-use files fall into three categories:

Application has...   Second Copy...   Examples
no lock on file can copy file safely Notepad
locked the file
with sharing.
Other applications are allowed to read it.
could copy file under certain circumstances. WordPad
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Excel
locked the file
exclusively.
Other applications can not access it at all.
can not copy file Microsoft Access database opened in Exclusive mode

In the current version of Second Copy there is an option to attempt to copy the files that are in-use by other programs. Whether this attempt is successful or not depends on how well the other program follows the Win32 file locking conventions. To see if this will work for you on your system in Second Copy go to the Advanced Properties dialog for the profile. In Second Copy 97 go to Edit | Options | Copy and select the "try to copy file..." option.

Maximum length for filenames and path
There are maximum limits, imposed by Windows, on how long you can have an ASCII file name and the full path as follows:

MAX_FILE_NAME is 256
MAX_PATH is 260

If you come across a filename/path that is too long for Second Copy to copy, please reduce the length of the filename or the path, and see if that works.

Missing icon from the system tray (sometimes)
This can happen if something on your system makes the Windows Explorer crash. When this happens, Windows Explorer restarts automatically but does not initialize some of the tray icons even though Second Copy may be active.

To verify if this is happening, next time you find that Second Copy icon is not in the system try, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task Manager. Then select the Processes tab, and see if Second Copy (SecCopy.exe) is running on the system. If it is running but does not show in the system tray then the cause is as explained above and you will have to find what else is causing Windows Explorer to crash.

Also, End Process from the Task Manager for SecCopy.exe, and start Second Copy again from the Start menu.

Once you have the Second Copy icon in the system tray, click on it to open the main Second Copy window. Then go to Edit | Options | Startup tab and make sure that you have "Start at log in" box checked and "Hide icon from system tray" is NOT checked.

On some CD-R/CD-RW drives destination file's time stamp gets set to current date instead of source file's time stamp
Second Copy copies source files to a temporary file and then renames them to the destination file name. This ensures that if the system crashes during the copy, the old version of the destination file does not get corrupted.

On some CD-R/CD-RW when the temporary file is renamed the time stamp gets reset to current date and it no longer matches with the source file's time stamp.

Work around:

You can set Second Copy to not copy files to the temporary file to workaround this driver problem.

1. Right click on the profile that is copying to the CD-RW drive and select Properties.

2. Select Customer Setup and click Next until you you come to the How page.

3. Click Advanced Properties button.

4. On Copy tab, check "Copy directly to destination file (do not copy to temporary file)".

5. Click OK.

6. Click Next and Finish.
